THE CERAMICS OF FEZ
Polychrom

The second group consists of objects decorated with brown, yellow and green :

......a)Brown : obtained from iron oxide (Moghnasiya) sold in Fez, is used when it reaches the colour of dried raisins. All the shades are obtained by varying the amount of water used. This colour fills small surfaces, outlines the contours of yellow and green motifs and finally trims the edges of objects : with hachures, lozanges, intertwined crosses etc...

......(golden) b)Yellow : This is a strong yellow called "dahbi" obtained from silica and calcin. It gives the ceramics that brightnesse that they are knouwn for. It is used over fairly large surfaces and thus brightens up the motifs which it ornates.

......c)Green : This is obtained from ground copper oxide crushed with water (Hdida lhamra) ; green is always used next to yellow. These two colours together give the polychrome its original structure.
